about me

When I was young I got a 1988 Santa Cruz Jason Jessee “Sungod” pro model skate deck. At the time, I had no idea who Jason Jessee was and had no idea that this particular skateboard was tailored to his exact specifications. No offense to Mr. Jessee, but his professional endorsement of this particular product was not the reason why I left “The Peddler” (our local strip-mall’s bicycle / skate shop) with my prized new board held tightly under my arm, a loose Santa Cruz sticker sliding around under the still-intact cellophane wrapper. To the contrary, the reason for my interest in the product followed the same reasoning that has led me to bring a wide range of things into my life, from cars to candybars: I simply liked the way it looked. The deck had an illustrated portrait of a stoic, bearded man composed of bright yellow and orange screen-printed flames set against a deep purple lacquered background. The tips of the man’s combusting hair licked the edges of the coffee-table sized skateboard. When I took the deck home, even my father complimented the Sungod’s graphics, saying, “they spend all of this time and money on making  these things look good, but when you use them, the asphalt is the only thing that gets a good view of them.” I later learned that the graphics that my father had said only the blacktop was enjoying were drawn by Jim Phillips. Unbeknownst to both myself and Jim, the seeds that led to my life's passion in graphic design were being planted at the time of the deck’s purchase.
